I have been meaning to blog for ages, and just never got round to it. Jeanette Lendon Photography (JLP) is branching out into something a bit different, and this year is the year to make it go big. My Instagram and Smartphone Photography workshops and webinars will be running alongside my corporate and commercial photography, which is very exciting.
A few years ago I watched a You Tube video of my photography hero Lara Jade take part in the ‘Cheap Camera Challenge’ and it totally changed the way I viewed photography. Do we rely too much on the equipment we have in order to produce the images we are after? For me, photography should be available to everyone. Smartphones are not advertised on the fact that you can make phone calls and send texts – the main selling point for them are the cameras, social media and connectivity. We all have the equipment to take great photos in our hands, we just need to know how to use it – composition and light are the main features for all photography, whether you are using a £20,000 Hasselblad or a cheap kid’s camera. How many of you asked for a DSLR for Christmas, used it 3 times, then never took it out again?
Instagram is one of the fastest growing social media platforms, and being solely visual, needs good images in order to attract the right attention. Most people don’t have the budget to hire a professional photographer to keep up with their social media schedule. Whether you are posting hourly, daily, weekly or even monthly, you need fresh, up to date, eye catching images to showcase your business. You may have an expensive camera sitting in a drawer, but after you have downloaded the images onto your computer, edited them, and then posted, it takes a lot of time – and loses that ‘instant’ feel of social media.
On my workshops, we go over Instagram and how it can work for your business. We then look at how to compose, take and edit photos on your Smartphone, developing your own signature ‘look’ that can be carried across all your social media platforms. I can come into your workplace to deliver Smartphone Photography workshops too, showing you how to get good quality, edited images, which can be sent straight to your Social Media manager lessening the need for buying and licensing stock images.
Don’t get me wrong, there is still a very valid place for pro photographers (I don’t want to do myself out of a job!), and there are situations when you need the right equipment for the right job, but it is exciting that mobile photography is starting to be recognised as a skill in it’s own right too (see The Telegraph’s 2017 Mobile Phone Photography Awards)
As well as running my corporate Instagram and Smartphone Photography workshops, I also run sessions for holiday Smartphone photography, I am official Airbnb Experience host holding Smartphone Photography walking tours in Camden (London), and I am also a recognised activity for employees working in The Shard.
